The Publisher vs. Technology

According to a book study group, sales of EBooks across the country have grown by 2.0 percent in the first quarter of 2010! The study was done over a four year period when EBooks were becoming trendier. This is up by a .8 percent increase from the years of 2007 to 2009.

Approximately 40 percent of EBook owners download there first book in this quarter due to so many users are getting the swing of buying their books electronically. After years of going to libraries and bookstores, studies show that it can be a difficult habit to change. Within the 40 percent surveyed, 32 percent bought fewer hardcover and paperback books once they found that downloading the text was easier and faster. A smaller percentage said that, The only way they would go back to buying a physical book is if the file was not available to download.

This tread is somewhat like what is happening with our friendly postal service! Due to emailing, texting, and instant messaging (I.M.), the postal service has been hit with the lost of the amount of mail that is shipped on a daily basis. This in fact has caused the increase in shipping postage. Publishers are now faced with the dilemma with the reduction of print runs. With that being said an increase in book cost are on the rise due to lower book purchasing. With the constant increase in technology, the book publishing industry is now classified is the same categories as online music and UFX Markets Trading downloads! Even thought the EBook links are legal compared to pirating music sites, it still affects jobs and physical sales.

The good news is all is not lost in for the publishing industry. A large percentage of the non-technical world still buys books! You still have the older generation that prefer the traditional ways of reading and vote to curl up with an old friend, a tangible book anytime!

At one point or another in our lives we have seen or used a phone book. With cell phones, navigational systems, and the internet, could the phone book be as extinct as the dinosaurs?

In 2009, some states on the East Coast, such as New York City for example, have eliminated that use of White Pages! On the other hand Yellow Pages are still being delivered at this present time. Many other states around the country are looking to follow in the same footsteps.

Although about 70 percent of people still use the Yellow Pages as a reference guide to look up numbers on local businesses, more are turning to technology to research this information. Meaning this current percentage is due to decrease significantly. In the long run this could be good news for the environment. Approximately, over 20 thousand tons of paper is used to create phone books. Aside from the increase of technology, landlines are become non-existent in homes these days. This means that people don’t have a need for a phone book if they do not have a phone to use. Plus, with more Americans on the go, they don’t have time to sit down to thumb through a reference book. Dictionaries and Thesauruses are also effect by this. Looking up the meaning of words can be done via internet or cell phones. The new generation prefers this way to be faster and more efficient when studying!

By the early 1920 s New York issued over a million phone books in circulation. It took an estimated six hundred delivery men to distribute these books to residents. Of course this was the only means to look up information in those days because there were only landline phones. In almost 90 years, the phone book could be a thing of the past. It may not be a choice of preference, but a common way of living our lives for the future.

What is the process of enrolling in an online university? The procedure can be quick and painless, but here is some information you should know!

After you pick the school that you are interested in you submit brief information about yourself. On average this requires your name, address, phone number, and interest of studies. Once the data is submitted an Information Response Coordinator (I.R.C.), contacts you with in one business day. They are in charge of obtaining more information from you to get you to the recruiter to help further your education. I.R.C’s are also in charge of making sure that you qualify for attending the school. Once all information is confirmed, you are then transferred to a recruiter who speaks with you about class online and finical aid.

The important things to remember:

-Do plenty of research on the school. Remember this is your money that you are spending. You don’t want to waste time on a school that can’t fulfill all of your needs.

-Ask plenty of questions! Know what your options are and understand the whole process before signing up. If something is unclear stay on it until you are comfortable with answer. If you are not at eases with the information, move on!

-Make sure you have all of your paperwork in order. When signing up for online classes for accreditation you should have your proof of graduation from high school or another university, your ACT or SAT’s scores, and transcripts. If you are doing class for leisure you may not need all of the information listed. It’s still a good idea to have it just in case.

-Send in all forms as directed and make sure that you have conformation of it. If you do it online, most likely you will get confirmation right away letting you know all things are set for enrollment. If not, call your recruiter right way so you can start your classes on time.

In the Department of Education back in 2009, studies show that students who opted to take classes online did better then students who took traditional class! It was also discovered that students who took regular class along with online courses had higher test scores. It was reported that 10.5 million students took classes online in the fall and winter of 2009! These numbers were predicted to double as of 2012.

The reason behind this is due to many students who are pursuing their education today having grown up in an area where the computer age has taken over. It is natural that the new generation would feel comfortable around what they are familiarized to.

Believe it or not, students are able to focus better when taking course online! It draws them in to wanting to learn more and avoid being distracted by peers. It puts them in a mind frame of having one on one attention, somewhat like have a tutor. For those who are discovering the online education avenue that comes from traditional ways of learning, has found they are drawn in because of time and flexibility. It’s pretty clear that education has changed leaps and bonds due to the computer age. How are the schools around the country affected by this change? Are schools up to speed with the ever changing times?

When it comes to the internet generation, schools are indeed lagging behind. It is obvious that the school systems are going to have to change to keep up with the technology and the way students are learning these days. Students are no longer learning the way they did 15-20 years ago by going to libraries and doing things manually like writing. This method worked over hundred years ago, but now with our fast pace world education must be upgrade like computer systems! Students are living in the computer age where it’s all about data entry and online research.

Thus, teachers are in need of getting an upgrade as well. Many instructors are in the dark about teaching methods when it comes to technical education. This means that many schools are going to have to take a part in coming up with ways to bring the net-generation style of teaching into the classrooms. Most schools have already taken this approach; such as requiring students to have laptops, but it’s still a long way from where schools ought to be. Schools are really no different then businesses, as upgrades come to past, they must be implemented to stay competitive. This in turn brings up how schools that do keep up with the net-generation, the students are more competitive in work studies and in life overall. They score better on test, exams, and are most likely to get into top schools in the country.

Today you can find everything online from clothing, to relationships, to education! There is much to offer in the virtual world, but there are many scams to override the convenience of online surfing. Millions are going online these days to further their education, but how do you know which ones are legit?

The top thing that should be on your list is to make sure that the school is accredited. What this means is that you should make sure that the college or university has been certified by the state or government. The institution should meet or exceeds the standards of online education. The school should also allow you to transfer credits from a previous school you attended. Don’t get me wrong, not all credits may transfer because of guidelines the institution may have, but make sure that enough are valid so you won’t have to start over from scratch! Find out prior to completion of online education if your degree will be valid! There is nothing worst then taking classes online and when you complete your education, you find out that your degree is useless. Usually schools that no one has heard of are clues that it may be mom and pop operation.

Be very cautions of schools that promise you a job or positions after graduation. This is a way that many schools scam people to sign up! They give a false sense of security causing you to enroll paying thousands of dollars. Sometimes they even go as far as saying that you can make your tuition back in one year! If an online school tries to draw you in with those tactics, don’t fall for it!

If you’re still unclear about signing up, you can always check with the Better Business Bureau to find out if the school has been reported. They will be able to shed more light so you can stay scam free!

So, you have joined the thousands of EBook users across the country. Now the new dilemma, what to do with all those books you have in your possession? Before you make that decision check out so ideas that may help.

-Donate them to a library or a book drive. Just because technology is a sign of the times doesn’t mean libraries or bookstores are out of business just yet! If you have downloaded your favorite books on your EBook, you can give them away to organizations. They will be more then happy to have them in their collection. Plus, you will have a tax write off which is always helpful!

-Include them in your next garage sale. Today you can find just about anything at a garage sale and books are always being featured. Turn those unwanted books into a profit, making your clutter someone else’s treasure.

-Give them away as gifts. It may sound odd to give something as a gift you have already used, but you don’t have to wait until a special occasion. If you have books that you think someone could use or it may help them, pass it along so they can be enlighten. Just make sure it’s in good condition. Used doesn’t mean abused!

-Most important, you may want to keep them. If all else fails, including the EBook, you may want to keep those books handy just as a precaution. It was once said that the English language is one of the hardest languages to learn because it is so complex. There are so many meanings to words and rules with exceptions, how can one keep up? Thankfully, we have all used at one point or another in our lives something called the dictionary. What happens when slang words are debated about being included in this handheld wonder?

Slang is being used these days by the young and the old like never before. Within the past ten to fifteen years debates by dictionary publishers have questioned if slang words should be included as a part of the English vocabulary.

In simple terms, a dictionary is a reference guild to give us meaning and pronunciation of words in our language. It is used to help with writing, diction, and understanding the translations of text. Every year a small number of words are added to the dictionary due to a procedure that vocabulary must go through to be worthy of being printed. Out of hundreds of terms that are discovered, only five may make it in the final picks! So if much work goes into making the dictionary sophisticated, then why bring slang into it?

Oxford English Dictionary publisher’s have reasoned that if slang has become more common then ever, putting those terminologies in the dictionary will only enhance they language by showing more versatility and culture.
