This work is a collection of stories; the title story being reminiscent of Hardy’s darker, longer novels. The “changed man” in this story is Captain Maumbry, who is a dashing Hussar from a regiment that comes to Casterbridge. Maumbry captivates most in his wake, but is considered to be haunted. Because of this, Maumbry is transformed into a deeply religious minister, which leaves his wife rendered poor. She will not accept this fact, so their marriage dissolves, changing their lives. The story exposes insight to something very true to the author’s heart.
