This book is composed of two stories about the American Civil war. The first is titled A Son of the Gods and the Second is A Horseman in the Sky. The main character is named Carter Druse, a young Virginian who decided to fight for the North. The sad story begins when Carter had to kill a horseman spy fighting for the south which later he discovered to be his father. Carter saw an enemy soldier on horse back at the edge of the cliff at the distance. He shot the horse and also the man and when he later reported to his commanding officer, it was revealed that the rider was his father. This story evolves in the young man’s struggle with himself, reality, his considerations and feelings. This is a very nice story written by American writer Ambrose Gwinett Bierce who expresses the cynicism of the post-Civil War and voiced the disillusionment following World War I in his writings.
