This novel is set on a plantation in the Solomon Islands. It tells of a disease that has infected many of the natives. The plantation owner, a white man, even showed signs and symptoms of the disease; but had to maintain power and control over his black workers. The workers were recruited for five years and paid very low wages. The racist overtones, and descriptions of the disease and discipline of the workers is utterly cringe-worthy, but this is probably a novel that you will not put down.
