This work is about a mother who refuses to grow up, a theme also explored in Barrie’s famous work “Peter Pan.” The work is considered Barrie’s “lost comedy,” and it is not often performed; it’s sometimes omitted from Barrie’s list of work. Its title refers to Alice’s refusal to become a traditional “mother” by giving up her immature ways. The story may have not resonated well with audiences at the time, but it seems to have found more success in recent years.
