There may come a time in the future when mankind will have to choose between books and clean air. Trees are cut to manufacture paper and books are printed on paper. As environmental degradation continues, it is just a question of time before mankind has to face hard choices. It is not possible to manufacture fresh air to cater to the entire earth. However, it certainly will be possible to manufacture electronic books to avoid consumption of paper without affecting mankind’s thirst to read and learn more.
The concept of electronic books started out as a very difficult and geeky concept. However, from nursery rhymes to books with extra large fonts designed for those with eye problems – electronic books have become very popular and common.
That the rise of the electronic book industry is going to help save more trees is an undeniable advantage. In such a scenario, it is obvious that these books are going to form a part of human learning experience in the future. Of course, other advantages like convenience and ease of usage are also present. All it takes is a single chip hardly the width of an individual’s finger to contain hundreds and thousands of electronic books.
These books will not suffer any damage. These books cannot be burnt. These books do not get eaten by termites. Centuries of knowledge and experience of mankind has been lost in the past simply because it has not been stored properly. Degradation of digital data occurs very slowly as compared to degradation of paper and books.
These practical advantages cannot be denied just because electronic books happened to be slightly uncomfortable. That too only for those who are used to paper books. In any case, the current young generation is getting used to e books and the next generation will be used to e books just as the current elderly generation was used to paper books.
