An electronic book is simply a printed book in electronic format. Being a soft copy it can be stored in the memory of your computer, laptop or pocket PC hard disk, transferred via the World Wide Web, and viewed using a reader program. Even the disk space in the hard disk memory can be upgraded, which makes it easy to store and share ebooks. For palm PDAs, upgradation can be done with the help of external storage units. Some examples of them are CompactFlash, Secure Digital and MultiMedia Cards.
First of all, find your ebook. They are available for free in several websites. Ebooks in such websites are usually those whose copyright protection has expired. So they can be downloaded or shared without any restriction. Browse through the categories in the store directories. Usually they contain ebooks of all kinds ranging from children’s books like Harry Potter and women’s magazines to classics such as Les Miserables. There are also some websites that sell ebooks. Some of these are owned by publishers of ebooks who offer them at premium prices. Besides, there are ebook libraries. You can sign up and obtain an elibrary membership that allows you access to their ebook collection. You don’t have to worry about returning the book on time. After their return date the ebook can no longer be opened by you unless you reissue it. Some local libraries also maintain an ebook lending department. So you might want to check with your local library. However, before you download make sure the ebook is in a format compatible with your ebook reading program.

Open the ebook on your palm PDF using the document reader. To do so, right click on the ebook file and choose Open With. Choose the reader application in the drop down menu. Your ebook should open.

There are many criticisms cited against electronic book when compared to paper books. Some are valid and reasonable. However, some criticisms are downright absurd. Another criticism is that there are no reputed authors of electronic books. Well, this product is still in the process of gaining wide acceptance amongst masses. Once its popularity increases, it is just a question of time before ‘big’ authors start releasing ebooks.

Further, whether an author is famous or not is a subjective issue. There are innumerable copies of popular books like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings that have been sold in the electronic format. As ebooks become saleable, big authors and big books shall also follow. It is a question of time before this happens.

The creation of an electronic book is often described as a complicated affair. Well, a person who has absolutely no knowledge of computer may feel so. However, the process of creation of an electronic book is no different than that of hardbound paper book. The text is prepared, edited and then published. The only difference is that the last stage takes place in the virtual world and not on paper.

In fact, most authors prefer typing and editing the book on the computer before converting the same into a printed book. The process of manufacturing an electronic book is just a step ahead of the process.

When one compares these rather frivolous criticisms with the fantastic advantages that electronic books offer, it is apparent that none of the so called negative points make sense. Hence, one should get used to ebooks so that one will not lag behind when the revolution comes.
